The girls had me raring to try for a new image. I hope to gather enough courage for the change.

Meanwhile, I think Emma Watson's new look is adorable!

Prisoner of Tehran

Warning! Shiny happy people takes a serious mode

Reading Prisoner of Tehran by Marina Nemat, a memoir of her being a political prisoner at Evin urged me to write my observations of Tehran / Iran during my visit a few months ago. Her accounts were tragic, being tortured and condemned to death by the Islamic Revolution regime (she referred to them as ‘regime’). I was not there in her place, and did not experience it myself, so I would not place her accounts as biased. After all, she never mentioned the religion (Islam) as cruel, just the people behind the regime who instructed the orders. However, there were also people in the regime who were sympathetic and tried to relax the punishments.

Unfortunately, the whole experience has etched a permanent scar towards the writer, her family and all the other survivors, and their families and also families of the fallen. And unfortunately too that this may cause a distorted view of the religion to those who are unable to differentiate between religion and the people quoting religion for their own overzealous ideals. The Islamic Revolution overthrowing of the Shah was supposedly to rid the country of corruption and sharing the wealth of the nation, but execution of those not in agreement with the regime was blatantly unjust.

But then again, the reverse happened during the time of the Shah, when supporters of the Islamic Revol were being arrested and executed. Ultimately, in both cases, lives were lost –political prisoners were sentenced to capital punishment and sadly, most of them were barely teenagers.

Back to the book - Some accounts were also very detailed, e.g. she remembered the exact dates of the writings of previous prisoners in her cell on the wall of the prison, e.g. Mahtab, Bahram, Katayoon and Pirooz and more dates: Dec 2, 1981; Dec 28, 1981; Feb 12, 1982 etc. Now I’m going to give her the benefit of the doubt and assume that she wrote these facts somewhere (but she never mentioned she kept a diary or anything) because it’s hard for anyone to remember exact dates of unknown, random people after 20 years (she was arrested in 1982, started to write the book in 2002).

Meanwhile, here are some of the accounts that I could relate to during our visit. Excerpts from the book are in bold, italic

Pictures of Ayatollah Khomeini and hateful slogans like “Death to America”, “Death to Israel”, “Death to Communists and All Enemies of Islam” and “Death to Anti-Revolutionaries” covered most walls.

The slogans aren’t visible anymore around Tehran (at least at the places we visited), except at the ex-US Embassy in Tehran. Iran severed ties with the US after the 1979 Islamic Revolution overthrew the Shah.
See here

The government had ordered women to cover their hair and had issued edicts against music, makeup, paintings of unveiled women, and Western books, which had all been declared satanic and therefore illegal.

The hair covering is still true as even tourists (female) have to cover their hair coming to Iran, although this ruling is a bit relaxed now, where you just need to wear a shawl or a hat over and it is OK to show strands of hair (and they can be of any colour)

As for music, I saw a row of shops selling musical instruments near our hotel in Tehran, so I guess they have allowed this now.

However, public musical performance may not yet being allowed, as per our conversation in a chance meeting with a rapper (yes, you read it right! As in Yo Wassup? kind) under one of the bridges in Esfahan (what a unique meeting place!), he was performing underground and kept it hush hush.

No bans on Western books though. We saw many of these at the bookstores in Esfahan.

I didn’t get the opportunity to see any paintings though. But there were pictures of unveiled women during the time of the Shah.

Ayatollah Khomeini died on June 3, 1989

We were in Tehran exactly 20 years after his death. The mood was somber, all the shops and touristic places were closed, it was a public holiday. Many people, women wearing chadors, flocked the train towards Khomeini’s shrine. People still revered the Ayatollah 20 years on.

These are only some of our observations during our very short trip and at just a few places.

Evin still holds political prisoners to this day.

Filmology

A bit on recent films I caught..

500 days of summer
Quirky and Sweet! Love it, but then again I am bias - as The Smiths and Belle & Sebastian were mentioned in the film
Zooey Deschanel as Summer is soooooooooooo cute! She made Tom (Gordon-Levitt) cry..
Favourite tagline: I heart Us

Inglourious Basterds
Lengthy, dialogue based film, but I loved it! I would have appreciated it better if I'd watch/knew the spaghetti western and combat war films referenced in the movie..

Cristoph Waltz as Col Hans Landa is one heck of a superb actor! He speaks French, German, English & Italian in the movie - what a feat! No wonder Tarantino mentioned that there would not be Basterds if not for Waltz
I missed Tarantino in a cameo part though
And why didn't Brad Pitt's Aldo Raine die?! (tak puas hati :-p)

Beware of the road bully

We were on our way back (5km to Ayer Keroh, Plus highway) when a Naza MPV flashed us from behind to overtake.

Partly, it was my dad's fault for not giving way (despite me & mom's protests to just let the nincompoop pass)

That totally enraged the bugger so he pursued us really close from the left lane.

I totally lost it too, knocked some sense into my dad (sorry dad, it was for our own good!). So dad let the bugger pass.

But the bugger wouldn't let it go. He changed back to our lane, right in front of us and slowed down. Really slow, almost to a halt.

Bugger gave a signal, showed his finger, asking us to stop at the emergency lane.

Of course we're having none of this, so we overtook the bugger. Bugger pursued us again, from the left lane, window rolled down, shouted some obscenities & showed his finger to us.

I saw his face. Bulky, dark, Malay, bald, with steel bracelet, bouncer-like.

Panic-stricken, I called 999 (for the first time ever in my life). The operator passed me to the Ayer Keroh police. I told the cop that we were being pursued by a road bully & the plate no. was PGE 969, a Naza Ria MPV.

Cop put me off the line after that, without any further instructions. Then nothing happened. I guess the bugger saw me on the phone, so he decided to take flight.

Didn't see the bugger again after that. We didn't dare to stop at any of the R&R so we just kept on moving.

So all you out there, if u see someone really fast, flashing behind you, just let the bugger overtake. Don't be an egoistical maniac to want to race with the bugger. It's totally not worth it.

Be careful if you see this road bully bugger maniac moron nincompoop mangkuk tingkat lagi berayun also: PGE 969 Naza Ria MPV

Fuzzy logic (of a different kind)

Today was a very sweet day, brings me a warm & fuzzy feeling mmmm ^_^
We had a photo session, all was dressed in baju kebangsaan (very sporting of the guys) it was also pleasing to the eye :-)

Had a really nice iftar at Wong Solo Kg Baru with beloved friends. Never knew Kg Baru could be so happening

And we finished the day at the crazy Jln TAR on a weekend night (really crowded), but still worth it. You should go try wrestling with the crowd sometimes, a good exercise :-)

Spaghetti tetrazzini

Left on my own on the first day of Ramadhan, I was forced to cook :-p
I actually could go to PaRam, but so lazy lah
So, browsed through Jamie Oliver's recipe, and found this:

Chicken and mushroom pasta bake (spaghetti tetrazzini)

Preheat the oven to 200ºC/400ºF/gas 6. Put your porcini mushrooms in a bowl and pour over just enough boiling water to cover them (approx. 150ml/5½fl oz). Put to one side to soak for a few minutes. Heat a saucepan big enough to hold all the ingredients, and pour in a splash of olive oil. Season the chicken pieces with salt and pepper and brown them gently in the oil. Strain the porcini, reserving the soaking water, and add them to the pan with the garlic and fresh mushrooms. Add the wine (no need lah Jamie!), with the strained porcini soaking water, and turn the heat down. Simmer gently until the chicken pieces are cooked through and the wine has reduced a little.

Meanwhile, cook the spaghetti in plenty of boiling salted water according to the packet instructions and drain well. Add the cream to the pan of chicken, then bring to the boil and turn the heat off. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Add the drained spaghetti to the creamy chicken sauce and toss well. Add three-quarters of the Parmesan and all of the basil and stir well. Transfer to an ovenproof baking dish or non-stick pan, sprinkle with half the remaining cheese and bake in the oven until golden brown, bubbling and crisp. Divide between your plates, drizzle with extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle with the rest of the cheese before serving.

Ingredients:
• 20g/a small handful of dried porcini mushrooms (or just use normal mushrooms)
• olive oil
• 4 chicken thighs, boned, skinned and cut into bite-sized pieces
• sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
• 2 cloves of garlic, peeled and finely sliced
• 350g/2 handfuls of mixed fresh mushrooms, cleaned and torn
• 200ml oz white wine (no need lah)
• 455g dried spaghetti
• 500ml double cream (can use milk)
• 200g Parmesan cheese, grated (or use normal cheese)
• a sprig of fresh basil, leaves picked

Voila! (but it turned a bit salty...never mind, first attempt)

Secret Alphabets (working title)

My biggest haul - think they weigh half of me (back pain)
Thanks to Zu for accompanying and helping me out.
Next (herculean) task: To finish reading them up!
All are non-fiction but mostly are pictorial books, so hopefully I'd be able to finish them (cheating) :-p

If u tolerate this...

Hope it will be a permanent ceasefire. Enough of the killings & destruction!
Normal postings will return soon

Excerpt from If U Tolerate This Then Your Children Will Be Next
(by Manic Street Preachers)

The future teaches you to be alone
The present to be afraid and cold
So if I can shoot rabbits
Then I can shoot fascists

Bullets for your brain today
But we'll forget it all again
Monuments put from pen to paper
Turns me into a gutless wonder

And if you tolerate this
Then your children will be next

Gravity keeps my head down
Or is it maybe shame
At being so young and being so vain

Holes in your head today
But I'm a pacifist
I've walked La Ramblas
But not with real intent

And if you tolerate this
Then your children will be next

And on the street tonight an old man plays
With newspaper cuttings of his glory days

And if you tolerate this
Then your children will be next

On hiatus

Since this blog is about 'fun' activities, I don't feel appropriate for a 'happy' post right now, what with the Gaza crisis going on.

Pray that there will be a ceasefire soon, for the sake of innocent lives, especially children.

In the meantime, watch the news, read, do our part.

Tok Mun can smile now :-)

A few anonymous good samaritans have donated generously to help pay for Tok Mun's forfeited electoral deposit. So financial contributions are no longer necessary. Perhaps we can give her moral support instead, maybe pay her a visit & give her company :-)

Hope her children are no longer angry at her for spending that much of her life savings.

Tok Mun lost, but she won our hearts

The results are in. Tok Mun lost to the BN candidate who won with more than 30,000 votes. Tok Mun only garnered 685 votes. This means she has forfeited the deposit amount of RM 10,000 to contest for a parliament seat as she got less than 1/3 of the vote required to get her deposit back.

If you wish to help Tok Mun ease her "financial loss" (I say this because she has definitely "won in our hearts" email your name, location (optional) and pledged amount to maimunbintiyusuf@gmail.com
Her bank account no will be posted at her blog http://maimunbintiyusuf.blogspot.com/ later. Please check her blog from time to time.

Vote for Tok Mun!

Salam....
My deepest respect to Tok Mun (Maimun binti Yusuf) for braving it out to improve & make a difference to her community, in the Parliament seat of Kuala Terengganu P.036
She lives in Kampung Gong Gemia, KT
She would definitely get my (mental) vote ( I'm voting at a different area) for her courage & determination, being rejected by SPR for 4 times before this...she said she had to wait for 20 years for this!

Undilah Tok Mun!

Marracus !

Nothing much to say 'cept :

1. Thanks to those who reads my blog & asked me to update

2. That beloved Lumix camera which the wind (I refuse to blame myself haha !) dropped would cost RM 850 to be fixed. So I declined to fix it, better get a new one. It was my brother's camera actually. He's so cool about it, not that I'm not feeling guilty, but yeah, he didn't butcher me heh, I'm still in one piece :-)

3. If you want to organise gatherings / rallies, don't bother to apply for approval. It never will! (you know what I mean....can't write it here, or I could be detained without trial ! Gasp ! )

4. More on rallies/gatherings, the police would set up roadblocks a few days in advance. When the Police was asked how effective were the roadblocks? They said "Don't have an answer for that"

You can't tell really who's going and who's not going..

Owh, I get it, it's a scare tactic, so less people would turn up for the gathering.

But what about commuters ? Normal, law-abiding people who only want to return home after a hard day's work were stuck in traffic. And a friend of mine was late for her exam because of the traffic jam caused by the roadblock.

Have some mercy, please, No roadblocks or stinging water canons OK ? (yeah right, as if any authorities would read this anyway)

5. The entry title has nothing to do with this post

6. I have no pictures to attach this post with. There are no flattering pictures of me of late. Haha ! (Yes, I'm quite vain, I choose pictures that I want to put here)

7. This is not worthy of a post, so I shall stop here. There are so many interesting blogs out there already :-) Go go discover, come back again next year hehe..Goodness, this is really pointless..

The disapperance...

Remember Ba Son? No, not him again!!??!!

Well, of course I couldn't give a **** (sorry, can't help it) about his whereabouts, but his disapperance does seem mysterious that one cannot help wonder what really happened to him.

Yes I know, I was responsible for the letter complaining about his attitude problem (towards us, at least, but people have said he is/was arrogant). But that letter was necessary, no regrets.

Anyway, coming back to his disapperance not long after the letter was emailed (to the relevant parties). He didn't show up for the July exams. The guys said that all his stuff are still in his room - bedsheet, pots and pans etc (but not his laptop, I know, no relevance between the laptop and pots).

His roommate doesn't know where he is. Immigration informed that he had already left Malaysia. But he didn't report back for duty in Vietnam, the company informed. And his parents when contacted, said he has not come home. He was registered for the October exam, but still did not show up. These are relayed to us by the Office, when enquiring whether we know his whereabouts.

Quite a case... Did I cause it? Of course not. Nope, not that I feel guilty, just curious what has really happened..Did I curse him so that he would just disappear and never come back? I did not. Did I plan a kidnapping, then dumping him deep in the murky waters of the mining pool? Of course not, although Kabi did jokingly suggest that.

Gue nak cita sket psl raya ni ha

Ahad-22/10/06
Hari ni gue balik kg – Ipoh. Takde perasaan nak beraya pun. Siap bwk nota nak study. Singgah umah Putri amik nota fotostat lagi tu. B4 gi umah Pah Or, gi Jusco dulu. Aiyak!!!! Ramainye orang !!! Takde parking!! Belasah je parking illegal.
Takde menda sgt today, tlg2 masak utk berbuka je. Tempoyak ikan keli, sayur chap chai & ikan masak kicap. Ade flat mee skali..yummy.
Esok puasa last day. Raye hari Selasa.

Isnin - 23/10/06
Amai kat Melbourne raye hari ni. Arab Saudi pun raye hari ni. Tapi diorg start posa 1 hari lagi awal. Ada part of Indon (Muhamdiah sect, as reported on TV), pun raye hari ni. Hari ni nothing much. Ada la study sket2. Pastu tlg2 isi beras dlm sarung ketupat, potong bawang etc. Dah ptg tu gue saje gi kacau mama gue kat dapur. Tanya byk sgt soklan, langsung kena halau dr dapur! Ceh! (Hehe..buleh escape ek, tak ye gak..)
So gue pun gi jln2 kuar amik gambar kat tepi Sg Kati. Sg ni tepi umah Pah Or jek. Baru banjir ari Sabtu b4 kitorg dtg. Hopefully dah raya ni tak le banjir. Ni le gambarnye.
Cantik gak scenery nye. Ada kampung feeling.

Malam – Pak Yop & family dtg takbir. Aiyak..nak takbir kul 9.30pm (tgh tgk Amazing Race 10 nih..tanduk setan mula naik..) Sambil takbir raya, sambil jeling kat TV. Sian, Peter & Sarah kuar. Huh..insomnia..tak leh tdo. Flick2 channel kat TV, last2 tgk cita Indon – Astro Aruna. Plastik la diorg acting, tapi sumanya cun2. Malas la nak tgk. Tutup TV, tergolek2, entah kul brapa tdo..baru rasa nak tdo, dah 6.30 am. Uuuh hwaargh..(yawn) bangun ler.

Selasa – 24/10/06
Hari ni hari raye. Semyg raye kat masjid tembok, ada aaa, somewhere kat Jln Kola Kangsor tu..Eih, tak jumpa pun Pak Yop & Wan Yong? Diorg semyg kat tempat lain kot..
Balik umah Pah Or – makan!! Menu today – sambal goreng, rendang, ketupat, lemang, soto (special nye recipe dr Pulau Lombok, Indon – dekat dgn Bali). K Salmah masak.
Pastu Pak Yop & family sampai. Ada rupanya diorg kat masjid tu tadi, tak perasan rupanya.
Next gi umah mama’s Ayah Chik, Tok Chik for me. Huwaa..ramainye orang !!! Langsung tak leh duduk. So, gue escape gi umah K Lina, ala dekat jek. Jln kaki pun buleh..both kat Rapat Setia. Fendi pun ada ni ha. Mak, adik & stepdad K Lina pun ada. K Lina tak buat kuih raye this year. Yelah, penat la dia kan.. tapi brownie ada..yeah!! Fendi mcm tak kasi mkn, dia kata byk colestrol, seb baik Jue ada jwpn skema – I luv colestrol!! Makan je la. Heheh.. pastu family gue pun dtg bertandang umah K Lina sbb umah Ayah Chik dah full house. Lari sini aaa..
Then diorg ciao; gue, K Lina & Fendi proceed gi umah Jue.

Cita best
Kitorg lalu jln cross country gi umah Jue kat Chemor. Fendi kata ulu nya rumah Jue! Pastu dia kata umah Noi pun ulu gak, dlm kebun getah, tapi ada 8 bilik & dekat dgn Gunung Ledang. Apa kaitan??!! Both ulu, heheh..
On the way umah Jue ada ladang kuda (seb baik Jue tahu kewujudan ldg kuda tuh), ada Giant hypermart, ada jual susu kambing. Mcm2 ada ! Pastu cross sg plak.
Then tak ingat umah Jue yg mana, so gue pun call dia. Dia kata umah no. 109!! Huh..napa tak jumpa??!! dari no. 90 + terus lompat 130+..mana umah Jue nih??
Pastu Jue call balik…"eh Aida, bukan 109 le, tu umah kat Lrg Seroja 1 (kat Kemasik.. waargghhh kah kah kah !!!) no. 94 ler”. Abis ler Jue, pas ni kena label “109” ler.. hahahah!!

Ala..No’oi takde lak. Boboi pun takde. Diorg raye kat Kedah. Hmmm..this time menu lain kat umah Jue, bukan laksa Penang & nugget, but nasi tomato!! Ada kemajuan! Hehe.. Jue suruh adik dia buatkan air..uuuiihh…garangnye akak sorg ni..
Pas mkn tertgk la plak cita Indon – bawang putih bawang merah – cita favourite Fendi rupanya! Uh, tapi Fendi mmg gitu, dr dulu lagi, dr zaman Lrg Seroja lagi, suka tgk Miss World & reality show ala minah lawa kena choose the best hunk & the like. Sometimes dia promote kat kitorg suruh tgk gak..hihi..

Dah kenyang balik ler.. balik umah K Lina dulu. Lepak2 jap, pastu diorg hanto gue balik Sg Kati. Aiseh..hujan plak. Lebat la plak. Jgn ler banjir…amin.. Gue simpan laptop & notes dlm beg & letak kat atas katil…suspens gak ni..hujan lebat gile..

Gambo wif Jue, K Lina n Fendi to be included

Cita suspens

Gi open house kat Tambun, courtesy of Ayah Chik’s family– diorg ada buat family reunion 500+ people earlier this morning kat Kepayang..check out NST 26/10/06

Air sampai level lutut ..tinggi gak.. Pah Or (dia tak leh gerak, terbaring je) & Uncle Sam (wheelchair bound) dah selamat kena evacuate – Kak Salmah le yg angkat tuh..barang2 suma dah letak atas meja & almari, takde le yg basah..phew..seb baik laptop & study notes OK… Sian K Salmah & K Rehmah alihkan brg2. Diorg kata pagi esok surut le air tu.. Gue ingat nak stay tolong diorg apa2 yg patut, tapi family gue nak pindah carik hotel. Hotel suma fully booked, last2 Ayah Chik offer satu bilik dia (dia book 2 bilik). So mlm tuh merempat kat bilik hotel dia ler

Rabu – 25/10/06
Pagi2 lagi dah bangun, ingat nak gi tolong kemas2 brg kat kg. Dah tak hujan ni, mesti air dah surut. Ala..diorg ni lambat betul nak siap..Tsk..tsk..sabor je la.. Gue senyap je malas nak cakap apa.. Kul 9.30 am baru sampai kat kg. Good as new. Laju betul K Salmah & K Rehmah but kerja..Uncle Sam & Pah Or pun dah diangkut balik. So gue tlg siapkan makanan kat meja ler, ada visitor dah dtg.

Paris
Hari ni gi kubur Pah & Tok. Sempat jumpa diorg sampai umur 7 tahun jek. Both pergi on the same year..masa diorg ada dulu mmg meriah..suma uncle & aunties & cousins berkumpul (my mom’s side – 8 org siblings). Syok masa tuh, main bunga api ler..tdo bergelimpangan reramai kat living room..pagi2 makan mamee..dok tak senonoh plak tu.. here are some of the pix..raya masa kecik2 dulu

Gambo raya tak senonoh to be included

Dari kubur gi Parit lak (@ Paris). Menu special sini laksa.. Hmm..sampai2 je, umah tutup. Rupa-rupanya takde orang. Nak tghari ni..lapar le plak. Seb baik Ayah Chik ada back up plan – ada makan2 kat umah abang dia kat Batu Gajah. Gue offer nak drive kan keta Vios Wan Chu, sian kat dia..drive dr KL and around Ipoh. Anak2 dia takde lesen lagik..sekolah lagik. Uncle nye plak tgh belajo kat Malta. Wah ceh..besh gak bwk Vios nih..

Pas makan (sup tulang, sambal belacan + kuinin, min kari, mmmm…ammak..nalarke’ : meaning: sedapnye!!!) kat Elephant Stone, balik Ipoh ler. Ayah Chik Tanya sape nak bwk Honda City dia? Dia nak kena gi Manjoi tlg prepare2 utk mlm ni punye makan.. (yup..family dia mmg ramai gile org..tonite will be the 4th upacara makan2 diorg..with the same circle of people yg makan2 today & semalam). OK, so gue bwk Honda City plak. Wah ceh..besh gak bwk City nih. Ntah bile nak bwk my bro’s Civic plak ..dia mcm tak nak kasik jek..
Before balik hotel, singgah sat kat Ipoh parade, Wan Chik & kids nak beli kudapan..snacks & junk food .

Mlm ni makan kat Manjoi plak (upacara ke-4). Gue bwk City, tapi Wan Chik jadik guide jln. Adeh..area kg ni jln dia kecik gile..dah terlepas lak junction. One way plak tuh. Adeh…2 kali buat U-turn. Last2 sampai gak. Wah..besornye umah Manjoi nih..patutle boleh muat beratus-ratus org.. Menu best – ada ikan masin, kari, lauk kicap, tapai + ice cream. Isk..asyik makan aje! Dah abis makan, kenyang, balik tdo, mcm ular sawa. Aaah..

Khamis – 26/10/06
The dreaded day has come. Hari ni kena balik UTP. Aiseh..busannye..takpele..Monday exam, kena ler study. Sampai2 kat UTP, keta WKV tak leh start lak. Aiseh..bateri dah weak. Kena carik mekanik..seb baik ada kedai bukak. So dpt ler tukar bateri. Takpe ah, tukar je, dah 3 tahun tak pernah tukar lagik. Pastu ingat nak lunch dulu wif family b4 diorg balik, tapi suma kedai tutup lagik. So gue pun balik le hostel. Terus kunci segala pintu yg ada..student tak balik lagi nih. Mlm tu Aula pun balik. OK la sket. Ada kwn.
Dah, tu je le nak cite. Nak sambung balik study economics ni..ciao !
