Snaefellnesjokull National park

 Sat 29/10/22

Today we would be covering the Snaefellness peninsular area, starting with Kirkjufell (Church) mountain (30 mins from Stykkisholmur). It is a instagram popular photo site, and also featured in Game of Thrones. Nevertheless, it does provide a beautiful view, with the small waterfall in the background. There is a free roadside parking with the view of Kirkjufell without the waterfall, or you could also go to the private parking site with the waterfall. We paid ISK 700 (RM22) for 30 minutes parking here. We saw some people who just parked by the roadside and crossed the road to avoid paying for parking. There is a camera capturing your car plate number once you enter the parking so you cannot avoid paying.

After that we proceeded to Snaefellnesjokull National park via the coastal road passing through another fishing village Olafsvik. Along the way, we stopped by at few view points to take pictures and flying the drone. Most of Iceland's attraction places prohibits the flying of drones, so it is limited to some smaller or less popular sites. We stopped at nearby Olafsvik church and Keflavikurbjarg to see the sea cliffs.

Next we entered the Snaefellnesjokull National park (free entrance) and parked at the Visitor centre near Malariff lighthouse (free parking). There is a small exhibition hall and toilet facilities. From the visitor centre, we walked to Londrangar basalt cliffs which used to be a volcanic crater (about 1 hour walk return trip). There is also another parking (free) for the Londrangar view point which only takes about 10 minutes walk; situated a few km away from Malariff visitor centre.

Our last stop for today was the Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge which is located near to Hellnar. There is a stream flowing from inside the canyon. The opening is narrow so only a few people can fit in at a time. Parking is free.

We then made our way back to our accomodation, but not before climbing the Helgafell hill just behind our cottage. The view is nice with the lake and fjord in the background and we flew the drone here.

Tonight the aurora borealis is weaker than last night, so we just managed to get a fade green light.
