Studlagil Egilsstadir

Wed 2/11/22

We would be heading to East Iceland today to Egilsstadir from Husavik (200km, 2h 30 mins). On the way to Egilsstadir, we made a slight detour from Route 1 to Studlagil canyon via Route 923. The weather towards Studlagil canyon was quite bad today in the morning with strong winds and heavy snow. But the road was still open, so we proceeded as plan, although we had to drive slower due to the strong wind.

We finally made it to Studlagil at around 12 noon. Studlagil canyon was created due to the force of a glacial river. There are also basalt rock columns at Studlagil. Due to the bad weather, we only walked down the staircase from the parking lot to take pictures. We did not cross to the other side of the river to take a more dramatic view of the basalt column by the river. We saw a few people did the walk though. Parking and entrance is free.

Not far from Studlagil (50 km), we made another stop at a viewpoint by Route 1, marked as "Canyon Moira" and took some pictures here. It was still snowing heavily, so we had to forego walking to the foot bridge.

Miraculously just 15 minutes after leaving Moira canyon (near the intersection to Vok baths), the weather improved, there was no more snow, everything around was still green. Where did all the snow go? It was like there was a boundary where the snow stopped.

Since it was still early (we forego the trekking at Studlagil and Moira canyon due to bad weather), we stopped at Bonus for groceries shopping. It was only 2pm at Egilsstadir and it was just slightly drizzling. It was a bit too late though to trek to Hengifoss waterfall, so we would be doing that tomorrow instead.

We arrived earlier at our Vinland guesthouse (booked through Booking.com, EUR 90 or RM 432 per night), so we visited the reindeer park behind our guesthouse, just a short walk from our room. The rest of the day were spent flying the drone around our guesthouse for practice and preparing dinner.
