Bergen
Sun 26 Jan 2020
Today we would be spending our time in Bergen after arriving from Flam yesterday. We stayed at an apartment nearby the city centre, about 15 minutes walk from Bergen train station as we preferred to cook our own meals.
It was winter (but drizzling) so the sun rose quite late at about 9am. We set out from the apartment after having our self made breakfast at 8.30am, still quite dark and drizzling outside. We walked to Bryggen - the old wharf of Bergen from the 12th century which is a Unesco World Heritage site. The proprietors of the Bryggen wooden buildings have not started business yet (and it was a Sunday) so we just walked around and took some pictures.
From Bryggen we just walked around the modern Bergen port. There is a seafood market, but it seemed to be closed for renovation so we just wandered outside.
On the way to the Bergen station, we stopped by the lake. Be careful if you have food with you, as the birds are attracted to them. We wanted to sit by the lake and enjoy our coffee and croissant by the lake, but decided against it when the birds started to surround us and have a bite at our food.
We then proceeded to Fantoft stave church, a reconstructed stave church, originally built in the 12th century, taking the tram from Bergen to Fantoft station. We bought the ticket from the ticket machine at Nonneseter station, just in front of Bergen train station for NOK 39 per person, one way. You could also buy a 24 hour ticket for NOK 100 if you plan to take the tram for more than 2 journeys. For us, we only planned to go to Fantoft by tram. The journey only took about 18 minutes. Since it was winter, the church is closed to visitors. So we only took pictures from the outside.
Back at Bergen, we walked a flight of stairs to St John's church.
Then we walked back down towards the Bergenhus fort from the 13th century.
Next we walked to Floibanen, the entrance to the Mt Floyen furnicular ride, but decided to just climb the flight of stairs until a white building - Skansens Bataljon and Skanseguttenes Forening
and take pictures from up there. We didn't climb up until the top of Mt Floyen though.
After the brief climbing, we descended back towards Bryggen to buy some souvenirs, and then called it a day. Tomorrow we would be making our way to the Lofoten islands via a direct flight from Bergen to Evenes airport.
