Val di Funes

 Sun 14/9/25

We woke up at 5.30am and got ready for breakfast at the Ibis hotel Malpensa at 7am. It was a simple but sufficient buffet style breakfast of croissant, bread, eggs, yougurt, tomato, fruits and coffee (courtesy of the machine). Note not to order latte in Italy as you will only get milk. You need to order coffee latte or at least cappuccino to get the coffee.

After breakfast, we checked out from the hotel at 9am to drive to Val di Funes or Funes valley in the Dolomites. The journey would take about 4 hours for a distance of 352 km via the highway. We paid the tolls with credit card, taking the ticket first. There is option to pay by cash too at certain toll booths where you have to look for the sign. The toll today cost EUR 10.20 at Pescheria exit and EUR 9.8 at Bolzano Nord.

Before going to our apartment, we stopped by Coop Castelrotto to buy some groceries, only to find it closed today on Sunday! Luckily there is another grocery store Eurospar about 2 mins away, so we made our way there.

After buying groceries, we continued our way to our apartment Residence Toeglhof, located at Funes Valley, with views of the Odle mountains from our balcony. We booked for 3 nights here without breakfast (since we would be cooking) for EUR 393 including tax (RM 1990), booked through bookingsuedtirol.com

We received the Sudtirol Guest Pass via email, which we saved it on our Wallet app to receive benefits such as 50% off parking rates and free public transportation by bus in the surrounding area.

We arrived at the apartment at 3.15pm and heated our sandwiches as late lunch that we had prepared in the morning as lunch. We weren't hungry so we didn't stop by anywhere to have lunch. We then walked to the nearby St Pietro town (very small town) about 10 minutes down the hill from our apartment. We eyed on the nice looking bakery Panificio Gasser (it was closed on Sunday) and grocery store next door (also closed), which we would be coming on another day.

After that, we walked back to our apartment as Partner In Crime wanted to watch Man United VS Man City match. After the match, Partner In Crime prepared dinner of rice with pan seared salmon and tomato with zucchini. We went to sleep early tonight as tomorrow we would be hiking at the Malga Zans Geisleralm.
